Sympathy" by Paul Laurence Dunbar is a poem about a ‘caged bird.’ Mr. Dunbar was the son of slaves and often wrote about slavery and life in the South.
The poem is arranged in stanzas that consist of 7 lines each. Dunbar uses a ABAABCC rhyming pattern to tell his tale of a bird in a cage. Each of the stanzas tells the plight of the poor bird and his desire to be free This story is about a bird that is caged in and wants to be free.the author is comparing the bird to slavery.in this story the bird hits his wings aginst the cage and shreaded blood this makes me feel sad for the bird because i can vizulize how the people in jail that wana be frree.while the bird is in the cage he sings a sad song that is telling people that he wants to be free. the story is confusing because at first it was sadness and then sympathy.
